Motivation, as the name suggests, is what ‘moves’ us. It is why we do anything (Education Hub, 2020). For example, this week in secondary PHE, our students continued to refine their volleyball skills. Most were motivated to improve their techniques; they worked independently and with a partner to practice the different drills. Then, the students applied their skills in a friendly round-robin tournament. During play, we observed that each team member could contribute effectively towards their team’s shared goal. The unit is successful because student learning is relevant, constructive, and social, all contributing factors to motivation to learn.
