Grade 4 students are learning about explorers at present. As part of this we have looked at the reasons that people explored and one of these was to trade with other people. Spice was an important thing that people wanted to buy from the far away countries in which they grew.
Why spice? With no refrigerators, food often tasted bad and spice was a useful way to hide the bad taste, With no easy way to wash themselves, people also smelled bad. Again, spices were used to cover that smell,
Grade 4 students made orange balls which they studded with cloves. These would have been hung in the house to help cover any bad smells there,
What great fun we had.
