Practical work in science is important for a variety of reasons. First and foremost, they are in and engaging but at a deeper level they are provided so that students can build their own concrete understandings of science concepts and to more masterfully handle equipment and chemicals. It also exposes them to ideas to help them decide what they can do for their independent experiment.
I consider it a priority to create these experiences for them. This week I am including some pictures from the last two weeks in science classes.
In grade 12 Chemistry we are early in our unit on electrochemistry. Here are some pictures of a demonstration and some lab work about the reactivity of various compounds (how easily they give up their electrons).
In grade 11 Biology we have been studying the unique properties of water so we performed a set of experiments to understand these properties and how they make life on earth possible. This is part of out larger unit on the chemistry of life – what makes all this living possible.
