This week in English, Grade 11 has been skipping to the end before reading page one.  We are going thousands of years back in time and looking at Ancient Greek drama. We will be studying the first of Sophocles Theban tragedies, Oedipus Rex. As we prepare to dive into this text, it was important to understand the role of dramatic irony and how the audience of this famous play already knew the story! To put ourselves on the same level, we have delved into the mythology around the story of Oedipus and explored how Sophocles used this to propel difficult questions about choice, knowledge, perception, and personal and cultural values.

In the coming weeks, we will be exploring how Greek theatre worked, the role of the chorus, and the ways in which characterization happens (including doing our own analysis of someone in the class).  Looking forward to another great week!
