We have been developing our observation skills this week in Grade 3 as we created our own paintings of our bedroom. We looked closely at one of Van Gogh’s paintings of his bedroom, discussed the techniques he used and then had a go at sketching our own. You should see some outlining happening in our artworks because this was a technique that Van Gogh used heavily in his bedroom painting.

Although we tried to make our artwork as realistic as possible, we were also free to use artistic licence to make changes and add or remove certain objects too. This made us wonder what Van Gogh may have added or removed.

We found taking a photograph helped us to sketch and paint what we saw. Mixing the shades we wanted was challenging sometimes. But overall we were pleased with our finished artworks.

But wait, that’s not all!

After looking closely at the painting ‘Van Gogh’s Chair’, we chose an interesting chair at our house to sketch. Van Gogh had left a couple of belongings on his chair so we placed something personal on our chair too.
