Last week while end of year assessments were taking place, Grade 3 were busy innovating and testing paper gliders to see which flew the furthest. We made at least 3 different paper planes, tested and measured the distance they flew, presented the results and created our own set of instructions. Students showed a great deal of creativity in the way they presented their work.

We needed to be researchers and innovators to find different ways to make paper planes, mathematicians and scientists to test the gliders, and communicators to present our work and create our instructions. As well as this, we needed to manage our time independently and solve problems along the way. What a lot of skills we are developing.

Here is a selection of student work.

The inventor we studied last week was Leonardo Da Vinci. What a man! We were amazed to learn that not only was he an inventor and an artist but extremely skilled in many other ways too. We gained quite a lot of information about his life and achievements by watching a video and reading about him.

Here is some of the information Isabel found out about Leonardo Da Vinci.

It was surprising to learn that amongst Da Vinci’s numerous futuristic designs, he even designed a robot. So we had a go at designing our own robot too.

Just for fun, we tried to imagine what Mona Lisa in Da Vinci’s most famous painting could be thinking or saying.
