As Grade 3 learn about how goods and services are traded, we had a Trading Thursday today.

During the week we practised bartering to negotiate on an agreed price through role play.

Mr Isles joined in our role play but wasn’t happy with the deal so wasn’t successful in ‘acquiring’ the goods. Role playing was so popular that it continued in the playground at lunchtime.

People were invited to bring one or two toys or books to trade. On the day every student in Grade 3 brought something to trade. We agreed on some rules for making the trading safe and as fair as possible. We knew that participating could possibly be disappointing if several students wanted the same item, yet even was brave enough to participate.

Students introduced their items by giving a sales pitch. Next each person put a counter beside the items they were interested in. And finally it was time for the trading to begin.

Students displayed creative thinking, flexibility, great manners and kindness to others as they negotiated to exchange items. Although we did not all end up with the item that we might have most hoped to acquire, everybody managed to exchange goods and finish with a smile.

Students are keen to have another Trading Day.

For fitness this week, Grade 5 taught us to play the Great Wall game. It not only required quick feet but quick thinking and teamwork too. It was great fun. Next week we hope to teach Mr Mike’s class how to play it.
