Grade 3 have been learning about the circulatory and respiratory systems this week. Students are becoming knowledgeable about the organs that work together in these systems and enjoyed looking at the models made by Al Muatasem and a clay skull made by Fatma.

We posed the question ‘Does height affect lung capacity?’ and then conducted an investigation to see whether the taller people in our class or smaller people had the greatest lung capacity. To test this we each blew a balloon in one breath, sealed the balloon and measured the circumference. Of course we needed to measure our height too.

We recorded the experiment following the scientific method and compared our measurements on a scatter graph. We could not find a relationship between our height and the amount of air in people’s balloons. We noticed that people’s prior experience blowing balloons caused some people to struggle blowing their balloon. This experiment made us wonder how adults lung capacity varies. Is it different between men and women, or dependent on the amount of exercise people do and can we improve our lung capacity? These questions could become a project for our science fair projects.

It was interesting comparing the difference in lung capacity between a few of our teachers and thinking about the reason for the difference.

We enjoyed singing Happy Birthday to Jule and Ms Wendy this week.
