A strong visual art program exposes students to a variety of media. 3D art teaches an entirely new set of skills and can be especially rewarding for hands-on, spatial, or kinesthetic learners. For schools lucky enough to offer a clay program, ceramics can improve fine motor skills, increase confidence, build knowledge of chemistry, and open up a variety of possible career paths.
A kiln room had always been a part of ABIS’ expansion plan, and one of Neil Tomalin’s final acts before departing ABIS was to sign off on my proposal to order an AMACO electric kiln, two top-quality Brent throwing wheels, a slab roller, and a variety of clays and glazes. I am pleased to report that the equipment has arrived and is in the process of being installed.
While I hope to begin using the facilities as soon as possible, it is vital to take time at this stage to make sure all health and safety recommendations have been met. Kilns fire at high temperatures and must be properly ventilated, and the space must allow for safe clean-up of clay dust to prevent irritation of the lungs. As we continue to prepare, I will look forward to being able to share our exciting new resources and equipment soon! One of my goals is to learn more about the four regional types of Omani clay and to have the opportunity to bring local pottery traditions into the classroom.
