I hope that every ABIS family has been able to balance the need for academic progress with the unique needs the pandemic has created. There is no end to the benefits of games, conversation, and other satisfying family interactions which are possible now more than ever since we are all so close together.

However, it is hard to keep your mind off the future needs of your children. A recent poll by EdChoice highlights the concerns parents are feeling about school closings and students losing access to formal schooling. Educators have long described a loss of learning over summer vacations. With the extra time away from school due to the pandemic there will be even more time during which learning can “slip.”

A report by the Northwest Evaluation Association has projected that young students could lose 30% of their reading gains and 50% of their math skills during this long period of time out of school. Because of this it is critical that student find ways to stay productively engaged in learning during this long period of time away from school.

Institutions like Khan Academy, Scholastic, as well as many authors are offering up programs in response to the Covid-19 threat to help keep kids engaged with learning during this time.
