Today I wanted to share with you the different types of learning that are happening in homes. While we are trying to maintain the traditional learning around reading, Writing, Maths and units of inquiry there are other skills your child can be engaged in. If you have younger children things like tidying their room, brushing their own teeth or learning to tie their shoelaces counts as learning. Following recipes and cooking or baking counts as learning. Building something out of wood, using a hammer and nails counts as learning. All different life skills count as learning!

Please find below some other samples that either teachers have shared with me or I found as I was looking through See Saw. Thank you for all of your efforts to support your children. We know it is not easy at this time but it is appreciated!

In the meantime, stay home, stay safe and stay well.

The first two examples are from Grade 2.

In this post from Alice she was searching through her Science book and found some information about Eco Systems. In her video Alice explains what she found in this book and on Brain Pop and then compared the two looking at what was the same and different. Alice also talked about the pictographs that she found.

In this second past from Grade 2, Pratiksha talks about the five dove chicks that are living in a nest near her home. She explains why birds are birds talking about birds having feathers, laying eggs, having bones, the fact they are not mammals because they lay eggs, and lists the attributes of birds.

This example is from Grade 3.

In this post Zhayne showed the smoothie recipe he had for himself and for his family. Zhayne posted videos of himself making the smoothie for everyone and then he created a striking set of instructions to share on See Saw.

The next post shows Lucas in KG1 practicing his dance moves from Ms Cary. It was great to see his older brothers leading the way and showing off their moves too!

Tameem, also in KG1 shows off his art skills and his final Gruffalo mask. I think he looks a little scary but Ms Lauma pointed out that his eyes look friendly. Thank goodness for that!

My next posts shows Ayla in grade 5 keeping fit by skipping. We all know that being physically fit helps our brains works better and helps us to stay healthy.

Also from grade 5 is another example of families learning together. Chloe is putting Tristan to work to help her explain the Associative Property of Addition. Tristan, you’ll be an expert by the time you get to grade 5!

This next piece of home learning is from grade 4 and show Gabriel’s research about a famous explorer. This is linked the grade 4 Unit of Inquiry around Explorers.

Vasco da Gama was born in Sines, Portugual in 1460.

His father was a knight and an explorer. He followed his father’s footsteps and soon commanded ships in the King’s name.

Vasco da Gama was the first European to sail from Europe to India around Africa. His mission was to reach India and open the sea route from Europe to the east.

Da Gama’s first two voyages were funded by King Manuel from Portugal.

Vasco da Gama left on his first voyage from Lisbon, Portugal to India on July 8, 1497. He had 170 men and 4 ships. He returned to Portugal 2 years later with around half of his crew members. They died from scurvy.

Vasco da Gama commanded two more fleets to India. The second voyage in 1502, was more of a military expedition where he captured Arab ships and tried to show the might of the Portuguese navy.

Vasco da Gama and his crew members overcame many difficulties in their expeditions, such as weather changes, attacks from other sailors, death of crew members and loss of vessels.

In 1524, the new king John The Third persuaded him to go back to India to become his Viceroy.

Due Vasco da Gama found his way to India, he succeeded in making Portugal a principal supplier of high luxury spices like pepper to the European market. This made the Portuguese State extremely wealthy, making Portugal into a great power.

Vasco da Gama died in 1538 in Kochi from malaria, during his third expedition. His body was later taken back to Portugal for burial there.
