This week grade 8 mathematicians have been looking at approaches to calculate the heights of different structures around the school campus. This is part of their unit looking at the Statement of Inquiry (SOI) mathematical discoveries of the past continue to help us to solve problems today. The approaches they were investigating were using

  • A clinometer to measure the angle
  • A mirror, when the can see the reflection of the top of the structure
  • Shadows, measuring the lengths of theirs and the structures
  • A set square (right angled isosceles triangle)

They were asked to then make a video tutorial communicating their understanding of two of the approaches. The videos will be assessed by criteria C: communication in maths, and will be assessed by grade 7.
