Did you know that we have a system for recycling water at ABIS? To conclude our inquiry into Water as a natural resource, Mr Paul and Mr Suresh gave us a tour of the Sewage Plant at ABIS.

We learned that the human waste from the toilets at ABIS is collected and treated through a process that involves several tanks and many pipes and pumps. The bacteria present helps the waste to break down, and small plastic balls move around amongst it to make sure that oxygen bubbles are forming which help it to break down too. Additional bacteria is added and gradually it becomes clean enough to be termed ‘grey water’ and it is safe for watering the gardens.

This means that our school does not need to buy quite so much water from the Municipal supply.

It’s great to know that all that waste can be useful!
