Most of us like our smart phones, but have we ever considered where do they come from? What precious metals were mined for us to get smart phones? What hardships did factory workers have to go through to make smart phones?
Global Perspectives is all about looking more deeply and uncovering as many sides of the story as we can, to see the BIG Picture. G9 students did some research and found some interesting facts that you might like to know. For example, did you know that by mining precious metals used in smart phones, it often releases toxic and often radioactive metals into the environment and water table? Did you know that factory workers who make smart phones often have to work many more hours than what they are paid to work? Did you know that the average consumer is not at all concerned about the impacts of buying smart phones?
Looking deeply, the G9 students realized that if more people (average consumers) knew the impacts of buying smart phones, they would probably be less likely to buy them as frequently as they do. Who knows!? Maybe those people who like to upgrade every year or two might wait, 3, 4, 5 or more years to buy the latest one.
Good start in Global Perspectives G9!
