Thank you parents for attending the student led conferences last week! I was impressed with the student’s communication skills and their confidence as they shared their learning with you. It is extremely rewarding as a teacher to be able to watch my students present their work with pride and understanding! The students were also very happy that you came. As a result of the student led conferences we have decided as a class to focus on our organization skills, writing skills, and to put in more effort and care into our work.
This week we have continued to strengthen our thinking skills by solving multiplication and division word problems. We have been copying the word problems from the board and remembering to organize our math problems neatly and use our best printing. It’s taken a lot of erasing and a lot of time, but our Math Journals are looking neater AND are problem solving skills are improving.
In UOI we have been learning about how people are connected in a workplace. We have looked at mission statements and have tried to create our own mission statements. We have also discussed rules in a workplace and responsibilities. Next week we will be inquirying further into rules and responsibilities and starting to think about our Summative assessment.
In writing we made a procedure writing piece together and then attempted to write our own procedural writing piece. We have also been working on writing a paragraph about a community helper. We will continue with paragraph writing and procedure writing in the coming weeks.
To celebrate Earth Day we decided to make art with plastic bottle caps. We researched and voted on a few different designs and decided on a turtle in the ocean because have many blue caps. As a class we sorted the bottle caps by color and then took turn painting the turtle scene and glueing the caps on. We shared responsibilities and worked towards a common goal just like in a real workplace! And we saved lots of plastic bottle caps from the landfills and oceans! Today we learned more about plastic in the oceans and we feel happy that we were able to reuse the caps to make something cool. Because we have tons of leftover caps, we will continue to make pictures during our art period. The students have already excitedly drawn many new designs to make.
Happy Earth Day! Have a GREEN weekend!
