If you ask a G8 student one thing they really need to know in math class, they will hopefully tell you that they need to know how to use units to solve math problems. G8 students got practice with this important skill as they calculated the time it takes for light to travel from the earth to the moon. Real world problems like these ask students to complete the “subproblem” of making sure all of their units are aligned. For example, as we know, meters and kilometers are not the same. In problem solving with units, meters need to be converted to kilometers or visa versa so they can provide us with accurate calculations. And yes, we found out it takes only 1.3 seconds for light to travel from the earth to the moon!
As it was a celebratory week we had a gift exchange as well. Happy holidays everybody!
Best wishes,
