Secondary students completed a reflective survey this morning aimed at helping them become Active Learners. This is basically a set of actions relating to note-taking, organisation, studying, revision, time management and goal setting that show that the student is ‘in control’ of their learning. The opposite to the term is a ‘passive or reactive’ learner, who is totally reliant on the teacher and ‘spoon fed’. Universities clearly prefer active learners, as they tend to be the most successful.
In the educational world Active Learning has different synonyms like self-motivated, independent or lifelong learners. Students have taken a survey and rated themselves on questions or actions guided by research, as well as skills identified by university. The aim is help them develop in areas of weakness and strengthen their skills. Teachers and Advisors will spend lots of time encouraging students to develop themselves in these areas this year and help prepare them for success at university and in their future careers.
Dates on the calendar for next week:
On Monday afternoon, grade 10,11 and 12 are going to an educational conference in Muscat called Edutrac. Lots of university representatives from the region and across the world will be there. This event should help motivate students and focus them on future careers. It will also be the first trip on ABIS’s brand new and freshly painted bus, which should be fun. Any parent can attend the conference for free, which is at the Muscat EXPO centre between October 12-14. Email l.thompson@abisoman.com if you would like details. You can easily find information here: http://www.edutracoman.com/index.php?pageid=2
We look forward to seeing parents of students going on The French Study Week on Tuesday night at 6:45 in the SLS. The meeting should not exceed 45 minutes.
Don’t forget the photo day(s) on Monday and Tuesday.
Have an enjoyable weekend!
