Congratulations to Holly McMorn, who received the Al Batinah Ministry of Education’s academic achievement award on behalf of the school at a special ceremony at the Maritime College on Wednesday morning. The award will be given annually to a “Grade 11 student, who excels in their courses and is a good ambassador for the school”. Holly narrowly beat a number of other Grade 11 students, who are also making particularly good progress with their studies. At the end of the year we look forward to issuing awards to Secondary students for individual subject achievement, progress, CAS and the Learner Profile, which are all areas we value as a school.
Well done to all the Secondary students who were involved in Monday’s ‘Sohar Sports Day’ against other schools. Our students did really well and you can read more information in Mr. Carberry’s post.
I enjoyed visiting Mr. Lopez’s Grade 9 Biology class this week (see the featured images) and witnessed students dissecting animal hearts, as part of their course. This very practical approach to learning the subject clearly makes classes more interesting and memorable for students. By watching how some of them skilfully using scalpels, I can imagine them becoming great surgeons.
Whilst the students are away and at play, all ABIS teachers are participating in a full day training workshop today (Thursday) aimed at helping them support student needs. We have flown in two specialists from the International School of Brussels, which has an excellent reputation as a leading school in this area. The workshop was very practical and has given us lots of ideas on how to support students with:
English as a second language learning
     Students with learning difficulties
     The gifted and talented.
These are three core areas that the school will be focusing on over the next few years, which have also been recommended by CIS in their recent report.
Enjoy the long weekend with your family.
