Monday was PAY DAY! Each group calculated their employee’s wages and then their own salaries. We then paid each other and added up how much money in total we made from our workdays. Most students chose to take their play money home, and some donated it back to be used during math lessons again next year. It took us all day to finish our Math Journal questions, our Business Plans, and count out everyone’s money. I think the students really enjoyed it. Be sure to look at your child’s website to see how they did on the Math Journal questions. This week we also reflected on our goals from UOI 5 and wrote about how we improved. We then Tuned In briefly to our new Unit of Inquiry – Where We Are In Place and Time. This UOI is about geography and maps, I have not shared the Central Idea with the students as I would like them to see if they can come up with the big idea themselves. Our lines of inquiry and key concepts for this UOI are, Components of maps (form), How maps have changed overtime (change), How we use maps to navigate and understand place (function). I asked students to write a question or comment that they had about this unit on a sticky note. I wrote a line on the board with “I don’t know anything about maps” on one end, “I know some things” in the middle, and “I know a lot of things about maps” on the other end, and asked students to place their sticky note where they thought it fit best. The majority of students placed their sticky note near the “I know lots of things about maps,” so next week we will Tune In some more and find out exactly what we know about maps and what questions we have. So far are questions are, “What does the word components mean?” “How do you use a map?” “Are there hidden treasure maps in the world?” and “Can we learn about Star Wars maps?”
Have a lovely long weekend! And sorry for the lack of photos, my storage is full and isn’t allowing me to take new photos, which means I have some iPad cleaning to do this weekend.
