All too soon we have reached the winter break; fifteen weeks of the school year have already gone. There have been lots of sporting successes, wonderful performing arts events, and many other student achievements filling the calendar. Importantly, our new teachers have settled in very well and established a healthy working relationship with students setting the conditions for quality learning. To celebrate this successful period, we had a pot luck breakfast, to which many students contributed delicious pastries, cakes, and savoury dishes. Usually this involves the parents so thank you for helping out. It was a lovely event and also provided the opportunity to present the new Student Council, another first for the school.   The student council shared their goals, one of which is to develop the connections with the Primary school so we don’t lose our community feel.

Our senior boys played excellent opposition from the Indian School in last week’s basketball match. Though it is fair to say that we were humbled, it is the first time that our full senior squad has played together against an experienced, older and bigger side, so a different result really could not be expected. We filmed the game and ‘Coach Carberry’ is using the footage to analyse what we did well and what we can work on so that students can develop their skills. Even though we were soundly beaten, the ABIS spirit and effort was present and we were very proud of that.  We hope to arrange more games against strong opposition in the future so that students can track their progress. No pain no gain.

We informed students today that the expansion work of the temporary SLS building ‘should’ begin over the break. The project is scheduled to take about two months. The plan is not to connect the two buildings until the extension is complete so that there is minimal disruption to student learning, though obviously there will be some. We will screen off the building work to ensure safety, reduce noise and any visual disruptions.

Have a wonderful break with your families and see you in the new year!
