Happy Oman National Day!
We had a great time celebrating Oman! We enjoyed trying all the sweet treats and learning about Oman history from Ms. Fatma. It was a fun morning!
This week in UOI we took a closer look at impacts of weather. In partners we brainstormed weather effects and shared our ideas with the class. We then read the story “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie” by Laura Numeroff, to help us better understand the cause and effect relationship. We then took our new understanding and applied it to what we know about air pressure. We wrote down a few domino effects of having low air pressure. Check out the students websites to see our work.
In language we started a new spelling program called Words Their Way. Each student was given a Word Sort and everyday they have been practicing sorting their words by their spelling pattern. Students will get a new Word Sort every week. Ask your child if they remember their spelling pattern, being able to identify spelling patterns and reflect on spelling rules is how Words Their Way helps students become great spellers.
In Math we are still working on making graphs and recognizing number patterns. Students worked hard in our different Math stations this week and are almost ready to take on our big Summative Assessment task of graphing our weather data and finding patterns!
HOMEWORK – Please remind your child to RECORD their WEATHER DATA on Friday and Saturday. This data is very important and is needed for them to successfully complete their Summative Assessments. Your child’s weather data table is in their homework folder, please ensure it makes it’s way back to school on Sunday.
Reading Journals -New homework goals and W.I.L.F. As a result of our progress reports, students chose 1 area in which they want to improve. As a class we made a checklist of what success in these areas looks like (W.I.L.F). I will be checking on Sundays to see if students have been working on their goals. Parents please remind your child of their goal and of the success criteria. If your child’s goal is time-management, please encourage them by having them read their W.I.L.F checklist and record the time goal beside each task in the Reading Journal. If you child’s goal is effort or self-editing, please encourage your child by having them read their W.I.L.F checklist and checking their work. Asking questions, and having your child read their writing aloud will help them to become more independent learners.
Have a great weekend!
