Students in Grades 7 and 8 have now completed their last major English units for the year so I decided that they should learn an essential life skill: how to do a crossword!
I am a personal fan of the crossword and used to do a lot in my former life as a single man without a family. Learning to do crosswords offers the following advantages to students: a) they learn a new skill and strategy, b) they learning new words and synonyms, c) they learn patience, d) they learn the value of broadening their vocabulary. There is also a certain feeling of joy/success when you complete one. In case you’re bored and fancy a go, I have attached one that Grade 7 attempted today (they were allowed to visit ‘Uncle Google’). Maybe they’ll do some over the summer break!
