We are learning about the art of persuasion in class. To be persuasive, we must give solid proof about our opinions to get others to see things our way. To practice, we are trying to persuade each other to choose the book we want for Ms. Fitch to read to the class. To do this, we need to use our Prior Knowledge reading skills…learning as much about the book as we can without actually reading it! That is how we choose books to read in the first place.

Ms. Fitch showed us how to do this using The Borrowers.

She evaluated what she learned from the covers of the book. By looking at the covers, she decided that this book is going to be great!

But just saying a book is great is not good enough! We have to prove it. To prove what we think, we have to explain what we think, why we think it and how we know. This is called the What-Why-How strategy. We can use this when we are writing, speaking, evaluating….and persuading! Here is an example from the Prior Knowledge talent from The Borrowers.
