This week, our Grade 11 biology students stepped directly into the shoes of molecular geneticists as we launched our new unit on biomolecules! With the spotlight firmly on DNA, the classroom transformed into a vibrant design lab.
To bridge microscopic concepts with tangible science, students constructed 3D physical models of the double helix. Using everyday craft and modeling materials, they carefully pieced together the sugar-phosphate backbones and applied complementary base-pairing rules (adenine with thymine, cytosine with guanine) to complete their strands.
Once the builds were complete, learners took the floor to present their models, sharing creative design choices and debating the functional significance of the anti-parallel helical structure. It was an inspiring display of collaboration, hands-on inquiry, and scientific communication. Wonderful job to all our Grade 11 scientists keep up the curiosity!
