Dear Robloxian parents,

What an eventful and exciting week we have had in our Unit of Inquiry: Sharing the Planet! Students have now chosen the animal they will research for their project. It would be lovely if you could ask your child what animal they decided to research on further.

As part of our unit of inquiry, The Robloxians will be completing a project at school, where they create a habitat of their chosen animal. Most of them have picked shoe boxes and others have picked, a Triorama, egg cartons etc.
If you decide to START the project at home, please encourage your child to create as much of the project independently as possible. The project is mostly to be done at school. The goal is not perfection, but a wonderful reflection of their own creativity, effort, and learning.

This week we were also introduced to food chains and began exploring the important roles animals play in ecosystems. Students learnt about:

  • Predators and prey

  • Herbivores, carnivores, and omnivores

  • Interdependance

Through these ideas, students will begin to understand how animals, humans, and the environment are all connected and how these relationships help living things survive.

English

In English, we continued exploring vowel teams that make the long /o/ sound. Students learned the spelling patterns oe, oa, and ow. You can support your child at home by encouraging them to look for these patterns while reading, practise writing words with these sounds, or watch fun phonics videos that reinforce the long /o/ sound.

We also introduced compound words. A compound word is created when two smaller words are joined together to make a new word with its own meaning. For example:

  • sun + flower = sunflower

  • rain + bow = rainbow

  • tooth + brush = toothbrush

Students practised identifying the two smaller words inside a compound word and creating some of their own. This helps strengthen their vocabulary and understanding of how words are built.

Students also completed their Glow and Grow reflections, which they will proudly present during the Student Led Conferences in April. I am very excited for them to share their learning journey with you and hear your feedback!

Maths

In Maths, we have continued exploring time. Students are strengthening their understanding of:

  • O’clock and half past

  • Quarter past and quarter to

  • Skip counting in 5s to read the clock every five minutes

  • Reading both analogue and digital clocks

  • Understanding the difference between AM and PM
