This week our students tried to grow and sell their bananas to Ace Banana Sohar International (ABIS) workers- Miss Rachel, Miss Megan and Ms. Khadija. Out of 40 bananas, only 2 met our quality standards! This brought us to the discussion of fair trade. What stakeholders are there when buying and selling bananas? How much should each stakeholder get? Does everyone get the same amount? Do the workers at the banana plantation get more? After this we looked at the different types of farming there are through readings, pictures and videos. Students completed a See, Think, Wonder thinking routine with each station. The types of farming we focused on were: industrial farming, organic farming, hydroponics, vertical farming and local/community farming.

In maths we focused on dividing fractions by a whole number. Students were taught how to make a whole number a fraction by putting it over 1, and taking the reciprocal of it (flipping it) and then multiplying across. Some students found it easier to put the whole number over 1 and then cross multiply to get their answer. Either way, works! We also put our problem-solving skills to the test and tried to find as many different possibilities as they could to solve a word problem. The possibilities were endless and it was awesome to see their critical thinking skills flourishing.

In literacy we honed into opinion writing by looking at an exemplar writing piece and highlighting different aspects such as the claim/thesis statement, the points being made, actual evidence, personal knowledge evidence and the concluding statement. We then zoomed into looking at the introduction paragraph and focused on the key aspects within the introduction; a hook, 2-3 sentences giving an overview of the topic and then the thesis/claim statement. They explored different sentence structures for the thesis/claim statement and more importantly learnt that there should alway be 3 reasons. They gave this a try with a partner on if dogs/cats should be allowed at school, before giving it a try on their own with a different prompt.

We were able to finish off our week attending the KG1-Grade 2 assembly! Please find more photos from our week here.

Looking forward
Next week, we will be going back to fractions and really practising the different concepts we covered such as adding and subtracting fractions with like and unlike denominators, simplifying fractions, comparing and ordering fractions and multiplying and dividing fractions. Some students will benefit from the additional practise, while others will move onto a problem-solving activity involving fractions to further develop their understanding and apply the skills learnt. In literacy we will begin to look at the structure of the 3 reasoning paragraphs within opinion writing. In UOI we will look at our responsibility to make informed food choices that consider people and the planet.

Best wishes, Grade 5 Team!
