What an amazing week it has been! On Tuesday morning, Grade 5 started their day with a fun run around the field, getting some fresh air and exercise! It was a nice way to start our morning. We ended the week with being audience members for a sneak preview of the Secondary Winter Concert and WOW, was it fantastic!
Our Arabic students worked extremely hard this week sitting for their MOE exams. Their efforts did not go unnoticed, amazing job Grade 5!

In UOI, we started with our own space race where students had to go outside to find 18 fact cards to read and answer the question on their recording sheet. It was a fun way to learn some facts about space! We engaged students and encouraged them to be inquirers, creating strong questions related to space. We did this by first introducing them to our specified concepts (used to be known as key concepts); form – what is it like?, change- how does it change?, and connection- how is it connected to other things?. In small groups, they were given questions that they had to sort into the three types of questions, having great discussions along the way to explain their thinking and debating where it belongs. After this, students used sentence starters to create their own form, change and connection questions. To develop their vocabulary of words related to our unit, students created Frayer models of our additional concepts; discovery, exploration, space, technology, planets, solar system, and universe. Frayer models help students to find the translation of the word(s) in their home language, discover the meaning and write it in a way that makes sense to them, draw it, and give examples and non-examples of it.
In Maths, students focused on reading numbers with decimals and identifying the place value of digits to the right of the decimal point such as tenths, hundreths, and thousandths. We talked about the importance of the ‘-ths’ at the end of these words. We also practised our rounding again, but applying it to numbers with decimals. Some students found this challenging. We also began to explore different strategies for multiplying multi-digit numbers together.

Looking forward to next week:
Students will begin to explore how our solar system works and how it affects life on Earth, such as days and nights and also our tides. In maths we will continue to look at different multiplication strategies such as box method, partial products and standard algorithms. Please ask your child next week to show you a multiplication strategy! In literacy we will start looking at science fiction texts.
