Grade 4 has been working very hard to develop their mental fluency using addition and subtraction. While many students are able to compute large numbers using pencil, paper and good ol’ fashioned arithmetic, mental strategies prove to be a much more difficult challenge. Solving number problems mentally develops number sense and ultimately to deeperĀ mathematical understanding.

We used a range of games that required quick retrieval of basic facts that will studentsĀ in both their mental and written fluency. Everyone seemed to really enjoy the games, especially the “bowling” game.
