IMG_0677 Taya and Coco read a book called Sadoko and the 1000 Paper Cranes.  The story is based  on the true story of Sadako Sasaki, who lived in Hiroshima at the time of the atomic bombing by the United States. Subsequently, she was diagnosed with leukemia (her mother referred to it as “an atom bomb disease”). She was hospitalized on February 21, 1955, and given, at the most, a year to live. Sadoko believed if she made 1000 paper cranes, she would survive. Today, children from all over the world make paper cranes in her memory and to symbolize their hopes for peace. These cranes are sent to Japan to be displayed at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum. Taya and Coco are hoping to send 1000 paper cranes to Japan. You can help by making paper cranes and bringing  them to school.

Taya and Coco have made a video on how to make them. You can watch it here.

To be eco-friendly, use scrap paper! A box will be placed in the MPA to collect the cranes. We will be sending them off during the last week of school.
