What’s Up in the UOI?

By: Janine, Hannah and Abdul

Well our exciting explorers unit has come to an end. Here are some things we learned:

  •  How to argue a point of view
  • What you need when you go exploring
  • How to read and make a map
  • In the olden days they used to see a sea creature and put more details into it and put it on maps
  • Exploration can be a good or a bad idea but it’s the way you use it
  • Exploration  is going to the unknown
  • Different explorers

We did more though there is too much to write about!

In this Unit the concepts we used were:

  • Perspective: What were the different points of view
  • Change: What changed because of exploration
  • Causation: Why did people explore

The skills that we used were:

  • Asking Questions
  • Observing
  • Planning
  • Collecting
  • Recording
  • Organizing information
  • Understanding

The Attitudes we used were:

  • Respect: The respect for the explorers
  • Appreciation: The appreciation we have for explorers
  • Empathy: Indigenous for tragedies

That’s how everything went during Exploration

What’s up in Energy?

Our new unit of inquiry will be about energy. Our central idea is Energy is renewable and non-renewable. Our lines of inquiry are forms of energy, sources of energy and harnessing energy. We are using these concepts: responsibility, causation and change. The Learner Profile Attributes we are using during Energy are caring and principled. We hope to use these attitudes: commitment, respect and curiosity. Energy is a Science Unit so we will be doing lots of experiments!

What’s Up with Passion Projects?

All the students in grade 4 have to do a passion project on one of the units of inquiry this year.

We have been collecting information from books, internet and presenting what we found. We have listened to 4 people that chose exploration for their passion project those people were: Simon, Taif, Jackson and Etienne. Most of them tried to echo the central idea of exploration and it was: exploration impacts upon societies. The attitudes of exploration were: respect, appreciation and empathy. The concepts were: change, perspective and causation.

The Debate

We had a debate on the 30th of November. Parents were invited to watch us argue, and should have chosen sides, and none of them chose because  they said it was because “We were all too convincing.” We had to argue whether exploration was great, or really bad. Some of us would have liked to choose our own sides, but to make it fair, Mrs. Saunders pulled our names out of a hat. “ I would have liked to pick my own buddies, but it was fair.” Kalea said. “Picking my own people would have been fun, but our name out of a hat was definitely fair.” declared Taif. We all had to argue our sides, and we had about a week or so to prepare. My team, Taif, Kalea, Etienne and I were very worried we wouldn’t win, but neither of our teams won, so we were a bit glad, and a bit sad that we didn’t win. In the end, we all agreed that exploration was a tool, and what we do with the tool is either good or bad.

 Recounts and Expositions

Ms. Saunders gave us a recount plan for us to write our facts in. Even though we were partners we weren’t allowed to copy each other. We could say the same thing we had talked about, but in our own words. A recount has a setting, the events in order and a conclusion. We also learned how to write an exposition, where you argue a point of view. An exposition starts with a state of a problem and a point of view, facts and evidence come later. Then we have to write a conclusion. It was much harder to write this than a narrative.

Maths with Ms. Liezel

In Maths with Mrs. Liezel, we learned to do division and we did long division. Hannah found 1 easy way to do division. Mrs. Liezel lets us play lots of games and sometimes we get to play Maths games on the computer. Some things we like to play are times attack, math blaster, Maths games for kids and many more! Maths is cool!

In I.C.T., we are using Wordle, and we did our reflections in it connecting the words using symbols. We’ve explored using Google Earth, tried to make a movie with movie maker and make bar graphs. We do a lot in I.C.T. , and have a big deal of fun!

What’s Up in Arabic?

In Arabic we had to read a story and someone records our mistakes and counts them and we try every week to beat a lower number. These were the marks: 1, 6, 17, and 24.

The story we read was about computers. We have spelling tests every Monday.

What’s Up with PE?

In PE we are getting ready for sports day. We are doing long jump, running and athletics. We run for 6 minutes. “I’ve never run for so long” said Jackson Willis who just finished 5 laps. We are also required to bring our PE kit which is a shirt and shorts. Today we practiced relays and sprinting. Sports day is important because it gives students a chance to try their best in sports of different types. Sports day is on January the 18th.
