ABIS students experienced what it feels like to be powerful members of the Board when Sohar Aluminium invited the 12 winners and runners up of a poster competition to their premises on Monday and gave them the VIP treatment. SA and the school have been collaborating to raise awareness of Heat Stress and how to avoid it as it is obviously a big issue in this part of the world. A competition to design Heat Stress posters involved more than 70 students entering and resulted in the following winners and runners up:

K1-K2 Pedro Tomaz (first place), Rennee Van der Wal (runner up)
K3-G1  Ahmad Shihabuddin (first place), Lilli Tomalin (runner up)
G2 -G3 Hassan Umar (first place), Theo Norrish (runner up)
G4 – G5 Tahlyn Chetty (first place), Newton Alfonso (runner up)
G6 – G7 Christine Nolido (first place), Antonio Gemarino (runner up)
G8 – G10 Jelani Gemarino (first place), Chandra Triveedhi (runner up

SA have given the competition a high profile by displaying all of the posters in a purpose built gallery for the attention of visitors and staff. The winning entries will be enlarged and put up around the plant to remind their workers of the dangers of heat stress and how to avoid it. We will also put copies of these up on display in the school so that our own students can play healthily in the sun!

Students received a paparazzi style welcome then refreshed with water and fruit before admiring the posters. They were then led into the Board Room and provided with sandwiches, drinks and samosas, whilst lounging in comfortable leather seats. This is probably the first time that the hi-tech Board room has been shared with ‘little people’ and though they didn’t make any million dollar decisions we did have a good game of Hangman. This was followed by a prize giving ceremony conducted by Michel Huot, the Chief Operating Officer. Prizes included toys, water guns and beach wear, as well as the compulsory sun cream. Just remember to have fun whilst playing ‘safely’ in the sun.
