In math we began our work on decimals with a pretend shopping trip. Armed with the weekly flyer from a local supermarket, the children had to buy groceries and household essentials for their entire families. After identifying what was needed (the list of necessities ranged from washing machines to chicken nuggets) they then had to tally the cost, make sure it was within the budget and calculate the balance. We will continue to work on decimals next week with the focus being on dividing and multiplying. If time permits we may explore the relationship between fractions, decimals and percentages. Our Unit of Inquiry, which looks at challenges and how we handle them, began this week (please follow the link below for more details on this unit). We will begin working on information reports, our writing genre next week.

Children in grade five are expected to spend around fifty minutes on homework per school day. The following homework planner contains an outline of the homework expectation and the approximate amount of time a child should spend:  https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B6z7r_xP06I-MTRSbWR5Rlg3c0k/edit?usp=docslist_api&filetype=msword
