This week in Grade 5, we have continued to delve deeper into our new Unit of Inquiry, exploring how photography can be used to communicate ideas about the world. Students examined the work of professional photographers, discussing the possible messages behind their images and considering how photographs can influence the way we think and feel.

We then began applying this understanding ourselves, experimenting with elements such as angle, light, distance, and background to help portray particular feelings and messages through our own photographs. It has been encouraging to see students beginning to think more intentionally about the choices they make behind the camera.

In maths, both classes have been exploring fractions, developing their understanding of how they work and how they can be represented. In literacy, we shifted from persuasive language to exploring artistic statements, helping students articulate the purpose and meaning behind creative work.

Looking ahead, next week will be a four-day week, as Thursday will be a day off for Teacher’s Day. We will also begin our Ramadan schedule. During this time, we will continue building on our current learning, particularly developing the specific skills photographers use when capturing powerful and meaningful images.

As we enter the month of Ramadan, we would like to wish all families observing a blessed and peaceful Ramadan Kareem.
Best wishes,
Mr. G & Miss Megan
