This week in UOI, our focus was on self-worth and resilience. The children explored how different voices or messages in our community can shape how we see ourselves. Using scenario cards, they decided whether each message would build up or hurt their self-worth, and reflected on which positive voices they want to listen to more. They also took on a fun team challenge — building a self-standing bridge out of popsicle sticks! Through this, they discovered how resilience helps us keep trying, even when things get tough. Afterwards, they shared their own ideas of when resilience is important in their daily lives.
In Literacy, we read Owl Moon to see how authors use the five senses to bring personal stories to life. Students then chose one of their own narrative ideas, described the setting using their senses, and began planning their “small moment” stories with a Mountain Story Map. This helps them build up to the main highlight or problem, add details, and bring their writing to a strong ending.
In Maths, we explored place value in creative ways. Students solved and wrote their own place value riddles, using their problem-solving skills to challenge each other. They also worked on showing numbers in standard and expanded form and looked at keywords in word problems to figure out which operations to use. These activities helped strengthen their number sense while making learning both fun and practical.

Looking ahead, students will be learning about the five types of action — lifestyle choices, participation, advocacy, social entrepreneurship, and social justice — and connecting these to our unit of inquiry as they brainstorm what action they might take. In Literacy, they will begin drafting their small moment stories, making sure to describe the setting with their senses and include their feelings throughout. In Maths, we’ll start exploring patterns and relationships in numbers.
Best wishes, Miss Megan & Mr. G
