What an exciting second week in Grade 5! We launched our first Unit of Inquiry, Who We Are, with the central idea: understanding and managing our feelings helps us build a healthy self-concept and develop resilience.
We kicked off with a playful provocation—Miss Megan’s unstoppable excitement and Mr. G’s rising frustration gave us the perfect chance to reflect on strategies for managing emotions. Students then expressed different feelings through mark-making and colors, explored the deeper layers behind emotions, and began unpacking key vocabulary. More details about the unit, including maths and literacy focuses, can be found in this flyer.
In maths, we began exploring place value by looking at the value of digits and reading large numbers, while also gauging prior knowledge. We also continued strengthening relationships within our class and across both Grade 5 groups.

Looking ahead, we will continue developing our understanding of place value and the base ten system. In our Unit of Inquiry, we will delve deeper into students’ understanding of emotions and their own emotional experiences. In literacy, we will begin to gauge students’ writing skills as we prepare to launch into narrative writing, connecting personal experiences with creativity. We are looking forward to another week of curiosity, connection, and growth!
Best wishes,
Mr. G & Miss Megan
