Unit of Inquiry research skills are in full affect. The students have been working so hard on their research this week. They are looking for animal facts such as height, weight, color, lifespan, diet, and habitat. Today students will complete their research and begin their rough drafts for their flip books. In fact, many students are already writing their rough drafts. Their flip book consists of a description, food, habitat, and predators. Students will write a paragraph about each heading with the facts they have gathered from their research. I can’t wait to learn about all the animals the students have chosen. The list of chosen animals has been shared on Seesaw. Please take a look at the list when referencing what habitat the home project is based on.
For English we have been working really hard on our writing skills. Students are completing Sunday through Wednesday mornings a fifteen minute writing journal. The focuses have been describing, setting, and sequencing. In phonics the vowel teams that represent the long o vowel sound have been introduced. The spellings for this sound are oe, oa, and ow. Examples would be toe, boat, and snow. We have continued looking at informational text, as we work on our research.
For mathematics, volume was introduced. The students should know that volume is the measurement of liquid. We also worked on double digit subtraction. And last, but definitely not least we completed a check for understanding on the four ways to represent a number. Those are standard form, written for, expanded form, and the visual form using base ten blocks.
Next week the UOI home project is due. I will attach specific directions today if you need more clarification. We will be working on our flip book paragraph rough drafts and final drafts. Presentations for the projects will take place in class on Tuesday and Wednesday. Please inform me if your child is leaving early on holiday so I can schedule their presentation as early as possible. Students will not be able to present until their flip book is complete.
For English we will focus on writing, phonics, and reading informative text. We will continue writing every morning in our writing journal. I can’t wait to share those with you during the April student conferences. We will continue working on our phonics review of vowel teams. No new vowel teams will be introduced next week. We will review the ones we have learned, which include ai, ay, ee, ea, ey, oi, oy, oe, oa, and ow. In 6+1 Traits of writing we are focusing on organization and will continue to for the next few weeks.
In math we will continue working on volume, the measurement of liquid. Students will be subtracting two digit numbers using manipulatives such as number lines, base ten blocks, and their fingers. The goal is for your child to find out the best way to complete subtraction for themselves. Some students might rely completely on the standard form of just using numbers. Review of place value will continue as it is the foundation of students understanding of mathematics.
