Dear Primary Families,
One of my favourite parts of the IB PYP programme is the PYP Exhibition and this week has been a wonderful reminder of all the great things about this unit of work.
On Tuesday and Wednesday this week the Mazoon was filled with 10 Exhibition displays showing the learning journeys for our grade 6 students. Topics chosen included Social Change in Art, Anime, Gender Equality in Sport, Norse Mythology, and Prevention of Sports Injuries (which, if you have seen me limping around school this week, you will know is a subject very close to my heart!).
The PYP Exhibition provides an opportunity for our students to apply all the ATL (Approaches to Learning) skills that they have been developing during the time in the PYP. As they have worked towards this week, they have made use of their communication skills, thinking skills, research skills, communication skills, and most definitely their self-management skills. In addition, they have applied their learner profile attributes. Students have been open-minded, inquirers, balanced, communicators, thinkers, and risk-takers.
Our students have approached their studies through a conceptual lens. When learning more about their chosen issues, they have considered a range of concepts, including change, function, connection, perspective, and responsibility. Questions such as, how have women’s rights in sports changed, how might different people view the role of art or anime in society, or how has the treatment of sports injuries changed over time, have all been considered.
This week has been a chance to celebrate the learning journeys for our grade 6 students. We recognise and value the process as well as the final product. The students will reflect on their work and all will, I am sure, identify ways in which they were successful as well as ways that they may approach a similar task differently in the future.
I would like to give particular thanks to Mr. Nicholson and Mr. Wetzel – with special mentions also to Mr. Peter and Ms. Sanaa and the mentors – for the way in which they have supported and guided the students throughout the whole process. The past 7 weeks since we returned to school in January has been especially busy and the work on display this week is a real testament to the efforts of the grade 6 team. Thank you!
Students and teachers will now take a well-earned break and I hope that you all enjoy the week away from school.
We will look forward to returning to our rescheduled Oman Week – please, no more rain! – beginning on 3rd March. Please do take the time to check the revised schedule to ensure that your child is prepared for each day.
Best regards,
Matthew
