Greetings dear parents,

Wowza! This week was highly engaging in terms of establishing and following through routines and promoting collaboration among students. Also, we had a fabulous Parent Information Evening last evening and once again, thanks to those of you who were there. Click the link to see photos from this week.

What we did in Week 2:

  • Students successfully completed their emoji projects, analyzed their work using a rubric and reflected on the process to enable us to use this for goal setting with the students next week.
  • We also made progress towards establishing our class culture by completing (well, almost!) the hashtags we decided to use to describe ourselves – #CARE, #TRY, #WORK, #GROW, #FOCUS & #TEAM. We plan to refer to these terms as we go on with building our learning community.
  • Students excitedly wrote their letters in their Family Message Journals (FMJ’s) to show them to you, parents! Please do take time to read these and write your reply to them.
  • In math, we read the book ‘How much is a million’ and learnt about large numbers like millions, billions and trillions. Students love saying these large numbers and we started with a fun activity where students in groups are working on making up a crazy story with a large number; the story need not make sense but the numbers should. Students also took some pre-assessments in math and it indicates that developing fact fluency will be one of our major focuses this year. We are considering this in our reflection for goal setting with the students next week.

How you can help at home:

  • Reading: We highly recommend reading with the students to develop comprehension, vocabulary and above all, joy for reading.
  • Quality Fun Time: Going for walks, playing board games, building something together could greatly help with students’ speaking skills in social settings and develop relationships.
  • Real-life math & Science: Again highly recommended! Drawing attention to math and Science in real-life and having students think and problem-solve are one of the best ways you can support their math and Science learning.
  • Math fast facts fluency: Please help students practise facts in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division- for example, 4+3, 9-5, 6 x 8, 72/9
  • Replying to their letters in the FMJ: We will appreciate you taking the time to write your replies to your children’s letters in the FMJ.

A quick heads up on dates to note:

  • 3 Sep to 7 Sep – WIDA speaking assessment (WIDA is a Language skill assessment done by Student Services Team to assess reading, writing, speaking & listening) – This week will be listening assessment only and will be done for each child individually. The rest of  the WIDA assessments are done for the Grade level together.
  • 10 Sep – After-School Activities Round 1 begins (Sign up sheets will be sent out soon)
  • 10 Sep – WIDA listening assessment
  • 11 Sep – WIDA Writing assessment
  • 12 Sep – WIDA Reading assessment

Worth Repeating:

  • Healthy lunch & snacks, please
  • Sustainability practices: Please send reusable water bottles and kindly avoid one-time use plastic.
