We have (finally) started to study Human Physiology! For many students in grade 11, it is something they have been anticipating.

The first part of the unit is about digestion. It is a great time for the students to see what they learned about enzymes and macromolecules at work.

Our first activity allowed them to set up a mechanism to observe and measure the digestion of starch and the absorption of the resulting glucose into the blood stream. We used common starch as well as some dehydrated enzymes. Finally we put solutions into a tube commonly used in dialysis so we could test for nutrients that can move through the membrane of the tubing. Here are some pictures of them at work.
