What’s the purpose? Was the question raised earlier this week when students started investigating the “nth” term. After some exploration with Mr. Pemberton, here are some responses:
Rafael: The purpose of nth and its basically a letter that replaces any number and it’s meaning is n for number.
Nicole: I think the purpose of the x letter is that it can easily tell that it can change into any number.
Shamma: I think the using of letters in math is an easy way to tell the letter changes into a number in an equation.
Tamika: I think we use letters in maths is so we can change letters into numbers. It is a lot easier than using a box when writing it out.
