1. Grade 5 is on the cusp of launching into their first Unit Of Inquiry (UOI), having already participated in numerous activities on the founding ideas of the Primary Years Program (PYP). If you are new to the PYP, the UOI are the modes (called ‘transdisciplinary themes’) through which the students and teacher will investigate and inquire into topics which typically have a social studies or science focus. However, these focuses are fluid and are designed so that both the students and the teacher are empowered to determine what and how they investigate the theme. The other goal of this design is to ensure the inquiry is shared, as much as possible, in the other subject areas. No easy task for the students or teachers, real active teaching and learning!
