They shared prior knowledge, asked thoughtful questions, and made meaningful connections to their own lives.<\/p>\n<p>During UOI time, we also dedicated practice sessions to our upcoming assembly. I\u2019m incredibly proud of the students\u2019 confidence, teamwork, and growing ability to speak clearly and interact with one another. With continued practice, I\u2019m hopeful that even more students will feel ready to participate actively in our next assembly.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Mathematics: Expanding Addition Strategies<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>We revisited all the addition strategies students have learned so far, helping them see that mathematicians choose strategies flexibly depending on the numbers they\u2019re working with. Here are expanded ideas you can include:<\/p>\n<ul role=\"list\">\n<li><strong><span role=\"button\" data-url=\"ca:\/\/s?q=Explain_place_value_strategy_for_grade_3\">Place\u2011value strategy<\/span><\/strong> \u2014 Breaking numbers into hundreds, tens, and ones to make addition clearer.<\/li>\n<li><strong><span role=\"button\" data-url=\"ca:\/\/s?q=Teach_number_line_jumps_grade_3\">Number line jumps<\/span><\/strong> \u2014 Using open number lines to add in friendly chunks.<\/li>\n<li><strong><span role=\"button\" data-url=\"ca:\/\/s?q=Teach_friendly_numbers_strategy\">Friendly numbers<\/span><\/strong> \u2014 Adjusting numbers to make them easier to work with (e.g., rounding to the nearest ten).<\/li>\n<li><strong><span role=\"button\" data-url=\"ca:\/\/s?q=Teach_compensation_strategy_grade_3\">Compensation<\/span><\/strong> \u2014 Shifting value from one number to another to simplify the sum.<\/li>\n<li><strong><span role=\"button\" data-url=\"ca:\/\/s?q=Use_base_ten_blocks_for_addition\">Base\u2011ten blocks<\/span><\/strong> \u2014 Visualizing regrouping and addition concretely.<\/li>\n<li><strong><span role=\"button\" data-url=\"ca:\/\/s?q=Teach_expanded_form_addition\">Expanded form<\/span><\/strong> \u2014 Adding each place value separately before combining the total.<\/li>\n<li><strong><span role=\"button\" data-url=\"ca:\/\/s?q=Teach_vertical_addition_steps\">Vertical algorithm<\/span><\/strong> \u2014 Practicing clear alignment and regrouping.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In addition to reviewing these strategies, students <strong>learned and practiced the break\u2011apart strategy<\/strong> to find the sum of two three\u2011digit numbers. This helped them see how decomposing numbers makes large addition more manageable and builds confidence with 3\u2011digit operations.<\/p>\n<h4>In literacy, students focused on both writing and comprehension:<\/h4>\n<ul role=\"list\">\n<li>They practiced writing a <strong>Burger Paragraph<\/strong>, learning how to structure a clear topic sentence, supporting details, and a concluding sentence.
