No typing. No answering. Just… read the instructions properly.

It sounds almost too simple, doesn’t it?

But assessment is not only about knowing the content. Students also need to understand what a question is actually asking, notice the command term, identify the evidence they need, and decide how they are going to respond before racing towards an answer. These are skills, and like every other skill, they have to be practised deliberately.

Grade 10s have been putting that into action in French this week. After a formative task designed specifically to identify what still needed work, they received feedback and moved into their summative assessments on mental health and wellbeing. They have been analysing WHO-style reports, distinguishing between problems, contributing factors and possible solutions, quoting evidence accurately, and paying close attention to exactly what each question asks of them.

There is a lovely shift that happens when students start realising that preparation is not simply “study more”. Sometimes it is slow down more. Read more carefully. Use the feedback. Notice the mistake you keep making. Practise that one thing again.

That is assessment literacy, and it matters far beyond Grade 10.

We do not want students to become experts at guessing what a teacher wants. We want them to become learners who can look at a challenge, understand what is being asked, make a plan, and then use what they know with purpose.

Five quiet minutes at the beginning of an assessment might not look like much.

But if those five minutes help a student stop, think and respond rather than rush, they may be some of the most valuable minutes we give them.

Warm wishes and à bientôt!
Miss J

This week in MYP Connections, we focused on assessment literacy: reading instructions carefully, noticing command terms, using feedback, and planning before answering.
