This term students in Grades 7, 9 and 10 are practicing their research skills by completing various investigations and products to showcase their learning and application of the skills.<\/p>\n

Grade 7s have been investigating specific biomes in Oman and have begun to practise locating information from sources and recording the relevant information in research notecards. They then apply the note-making skills they learned from lessons to make their own critical thinking notes based on the information they recorded. The students then use their notes to write a research report. Here is an example of a grade 7 student’s research notecard in comparison to that of a grade 9 student – notice the development in students becoming more selective to record most relevant information in their critical thinking notes:<\/p>\n

Grade 9 students have to be able to formulate their own research question and justify its relevance. The students were given a scaffold to build their justification. Here is what one grade 9 student wrote:<\/p>\n

As part of locating information, they need to build bibliographies of all possible sources that provide relevant information. Here is an example of a grade 10 student’s bibliography formatted according to MLA 9 style:<\/p>\n
