The children showed a reasonable knowledge of 2D shapes- there is often persistent mix-up when learning the names of shapes – especially between triangle and rectangle. They also showed a good understanding of sides, corners, curved and straight- vocabulary used to describe shapes. It was very clear that we need to work on spelling which is understandable and also a developing language skill. We will be able to move more quickly to 3D shapes, so that will follow. After the long written test, children were given a fun, creative activity to pair and make the different shapes with their hands or bodies but having to do this together. They really enjoyed this and were creative- see the photos to guess the shapes!

We also began our new unit and looked at our central idea to pick out key words to help us. Many students made the connection with their Grade 1 Unit and remembered the word community: “ It is when we live together….we do things to help each other……” One child tried to describe space- “ it can be big or small” and between them they realised that it meant an area or room or place where people do things together. As a class, they could list over 20 different community spaces; park, swimming pool, wadi, beach, shopping centre, hotel, Mall, hospital, museum, amusement park to name a few. They worked well in groups to draw and write these spaces. This seems a simple task but when I asked them at the end what they thought was the most important thing I wanted them to learn, they thought it was drawing or about community spaces. I replied yes, you are right but there was something else. One child did say after time for thinking, “work together”. This was a primary objective as it can be a challenge to arrange around even a large paper and decide who will do what. There were some issues and I did try to scaffold strategies for sharing and cooperating on a task as this is such an important skill and part of our life. It also reinforces the concept of community and working together. When we returned to the task the following day, I asked how would they organise themselves today( the theme of this Unit) A few replies which were pleasing: “we take turns….maybe one person can be leader…. Everyone has a go….we must share the paper and draw not the same” They worked calmly and continued the task with no issues on the second day. Very proud of them this week!

Have a lovely weekend everyone.

Shapes and Community Spaces

Students have worked well this week and faced some more checks and ‘pre-tests’ where we see how much a child understands before we learn together and try to fill in the gaps.
