The children have been exploring the many different things that can make up a culture, including food, clothing, music, celebrations, language, traditions and special places. We looked at how children around the world travel to school, explored different greetings and ways of saying hello, and discovered that people around the world can have very different ways of eating and sharing food. We also talked about different traditions and had lots of opportunities to compare these with our own experiences.

One of our lovely highlights this week was having Turkey bring in a special treat from Oman to share with the class. The children were very excited to try it! It also gave us a wonderful opportunity to talk about how treats and foods from around the world can be very different in appearance, even when they are all delicious, sweet and enjoyed as special treats. It was a lovely reminder that there are so many different ways to enjoy and celebrate food across cultures.

We also created mini versions of ourselves! A huge thank you to our little helpers and their families who collected mini yoghurt and juice bottles for us over the past few weeks. We finally put them to good use! The children transformed the bottles into little versions of themselves and used this activity to think more deeply about who they are at school. They talked and wrote about how they help others, what they can be and do at school, how they feel when they are at school and the different things they enjoy doing as part of our classroom community. It was wonderful to see their personalities shine through their creations.

We have also been thinking about Learner Profile attributes and what these look like in our everyday learning. The children chose an attribute that they felt represented them and thought about how they demonstrate this attribute in our classroom. This encouraged them to think about themselves not only as students, but also as learners who are developing their own strengths, identities and relationships with others.

In English, we have continued developing our reading and comprehension skills through shared stories and discussions. We enjoyed exploring Wordy Birdy and There’s a Monster in Your Book, using these stories to practise making predictions, answering questions and sharing our ideas. We also followed our reading with creative activities, giving the children opportunities to respond to stories through art and imagination.

It has been a busy week, and although we have had quite a few poorly Cats (and one poorly teacher too! 🫣), we have done our best to keep our classroom a happy, creative and engaging place to learn. I am very pleased to see the children becoming more comfortable with our routines, participating in discussions and beginning to build positive relationships with one another.

Happy Weekend, everyone!

Ms Cami

Dear CAT families, We have continued our inquiry into culture and identity this week.
