One month has been completed in Grade 2A, only 9 more months to go!! This week the students were busy completing their WIDA assessments. I should have those results in the next two weeks to share with you. In our class the students have completed their writing, numbers and reading beginning of the year assessments. We are almost done with only the phonics test left. I have already begun them, but as they are one on one assessments it won\u2019t be completed until next week. I am happy to meet with anybody interested in seeing their child\u2019s work in the beginning of October. Send me a SeeSaw message in one or two weeks, and I would happily arrange a meeting with you.<\/span><\/p>\n

In our Unit of Inquiry this week the students took a deep dive into the actual meaning of the theme, Who We Are. They literally chose words they did not understand and found the definition using dictionaries. Yes, I had the students learn how to use a dictionary. It is important that students are capable of using resources besides the internet. They seemed to enjoy searching for words in a book. Next week we will have our Shoebox Autobiography presentations, please have them turned in September 20th.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In English this week we completed our first whole class writing assignment. The topic was Indoor PE and the genre was recount. We will begin a new whole class writing assignment next week. The students will pick the topic and subtopics to write about and we will complete it together. After we complete the second whole class writing assignment I will then have them write a recount in groups. In grammar we have started working on verbs and will continue with verbs next week. For phonics we did not complete as much as I would have liked due to WIDA testing, but next week we will continue as normal. I was able to introduce the bonus letters f, l, s and z. The rule is when a word has a short vowel sound and ends with one of those four letters it is most likely doubled. Two exceptions are yes and bus, however many word follow the rule such as fuzz, loss, stiff and will.\u00a0 Next week I will introduce r-controlled sounds which included ar, er, ir and ur.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For maths this week I introduced expanded form to the students. An example of this could be 426 = 400 + 20 + 6. We will continue to work on this skill next week. We will also continue looking at data handling, specifically tally charts, pictographs and bar graphs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Home Projects are due next Sunday, September 20th. Please have them turned in, so I can plan their presentation schedules.<\/span><\/p>\n
