Across the Primary School, students have been developing their musical understanding through listening, exploring, composing, performing, and using music technology. From our youngest learners discovering instruments to our older students beginning digital notation projects, there has been plenty of music-making and inquiry.

KG1 & KG2 | Rhythm and Instrument Exploration

Our youngest musicians have been exploring rhythm through movement, listening and playing instruments. Students experimented with a variety of classroom percussion instruments and discovered that instruments can make very different sounds.

Through echo games and teacher-led musical activities, they practised keeping a steady beat, copying simple rhythmic patterns, and responding to musical signals. We are also learning the important skills of taking turns, listening to others, and playing together as an ensemble.

Our musical focus: steady beat • rhythm • loud and soft • fast and slow • instrument sounds • listening and responding

Grade 1 | Creating and Performing Rhythm Patterns

Grade 1 students have moved from simply performing rhythms to becoming young composers!

Students explored different rhythmic patterns and began arranging sounds to create their own short compositions. They then practised and performed their patterns, thinking carefully about maintaining a steady beat and performing accurately.

This gave students an opportunity to experience an important musical process:

Explore → Create → Practise → Perform → Reflect

Grade 2 | Composing Rhythm Patterns

Grade 2 continued developing their understanding of rhythm by composing and performing their own rhythmic patterns.

Students experimented with different combinations of note values and rhythmic ideas before organising them into short musical phrases. They are beginning to understand that composers make deliberate choices when organising sounds and that written symbols allow musical ideas to be remembered, shared and performed by others.

Grade 3 | Music Spellings and Notation Exploration

Grade 3 has been investigating the musical alphabet — A, B, C, D, E, F and G — and discovering how these notes are represented in musical notation.

Students explored the lines and spaces of the staff and used their growing notation knowledge to investigate musical words or “music spellings.”

Words such as BAD, DAD, EGG and CABBAGE provide a fun way for students to connect note names with their positions on the staff.

The challenge is no longer simply spelling the word — students must place each note accurately on the correct line or space.

Grade 4 | Music Spellings & Introduction to Flat.io

Grade 4 extended their notation work by combining music spellings with digital music technology.

Students were introduced to Flat.io, an online music notation platform that allows musicians to write, edit, hear and share musical scores.

After reviewing the musical alphabet and the placement of notes on the staff, students began transferring their musical ideas into digital notation. This is helping them see the connection between the music theory we learn in class and the tools used by composers and arrangers.

Our goal is for students to move confidently between hearing music, performing music, reading notation and creating their own scores.

Grades 5 & 6 | Transcribing the Oman National Anthem

Grades 5 and 6 have begun an exciting and meaningful notation project: transcribing the Oman National Anthem using Flat.io.

Rather than simply copying a finished score, students are exploring how a familiar piece of music can be represented through musical notation. They are applying their knowledge of pitch, rhythm, note values, bar lines, measures and staff notation while learning how to enter and edit music digitally.

The project brings together several areas of learning:

Listening + Music Theory + Notation + Digital Technology + Omani Culture

As the project develops, students will be able to listen back to their digital scores, identify inaccuracies, make corrections and reflect on how closely their transcription represents the music they know.

Music Learning Across the Primary School

Although the activities look very different from KG1 to Grade 6, there is a clear progression in our learning.

Our younger students begin by hearing, feeling and performing rhythm. They gradually learn to organise sounds into patterns, represent musical ideas using symbols, read conventional notation and eventually use digital tools to create and transcribe complete musical scores.

Most importantly, students are learning that music is not only something we listen to — music is something we can explore, understand, create, perform and share.

Listen. Explore. Create. Perform. Reflect.

Primary Music Weekly Blog Rhythm, Notation, Composition & Digital Music It has been another active and creative week in the Music Department!
