Our Grade 12 Chemistry students are continuing their exploration of Energetics in R1 SL<\/strong>, developing both their conceptual understanding and practical chemistry skills.<\/p>\n

This week, students carried out an investigation into enthalpy changes in aqueous solutions<\/strong>, using calorimetry to investigate the exothermic reaction between hydrochloric acid (HCl) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH)<\/strong>. Students collected experimental data, considered temperature changes and used their observations to explore how energy is transferred during chemical reactions.<\/p>\n

Beyond the chemistry itself, practical investigations like this are an important part of preparing students for their Internal Assessments (IAs)<\/strong>. They are developing essential skills in experimental design, accurate data collection, processing results, identifying sources of uncertainty and evaluating the quality of experimental evidence.<\/p>\n

Coming up this week:<\/strong>
\nOur focus will shift towards the calculations associated with enthalpy changes<\/strong>, before extending our understanding through energy cycles and Hess\u2019s Law<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The aim is to move beyond simply applying equations and encourage students to understand where the calculations come from, what the values mean, and how experimental evidence can be used to explain energy changes in chemical systems.<\/strong><\/p>\n
