We took a sound walkabout campus to hear the different sounds and wrote these down on our whiteboards, then drew pictures of the different things that made that sound. We later compared the outside sounds to the inside sounds we can hear during our day. We created a mind map to show our prior knowledge of sound and discussed these questions:

What sounds can we hear if different places?

Is our world ever completely silent?

Can we always hear breathing?

How is sound made?

How do we hear sounds?

Can everyone hear sounds? Why/Why not?

Why are sounds important to us?

In pairs, students found classroom objects to made sounds, then hid behind a screen when they shared their sounds while the rest of the class had to guess what objects made those sounds. Students wrote and drew descriptions and explanations about how sound is made and about how we hear sounds. We discussed what connections can be made between sounds being similar or different. The sutdents completed a written sound pre-assessment for diagnostic purposes.

Thank you to all those parents who have made comments on their child’s sustainability survey. Please try to complete this for your child as we check them everyday to see what answers a student has received and also supports their action for the previous unit: Sharing the planet.

In literacy this week, we have been adding descriptions to our writing using adjectives and thinking about which details would make a reader imagine their character. We have made words using letter patterns: at, ate, eat, each and letter sound /g/. Our reading strategy this week was using accuracy to make sure we use beginning and ending sounds to read familiar and unfamiliar words. We discussed the below:

Slow down to look at and pay attention to the end of the word

Ask yourself: Did I look at the whole word?

Did what I just read make sense?

In maths this wee, we observed how can we add or subtract fractions with the same denominators, some of us used unifix cubes to make fractions of amounts, ie 1/2 of cubes are blue, we coloured fraction flags and found whether a fraction was ‘greater than’, ‘less than’ or ‘equal to’. Students partitioned shapes to find equal shares. We also completed our fraction post-assessment.

Please find information about next week’s Book Fair, this will be an opportunity for your child to choose new books to add to their home library.

Book Fair information – English

Book Fair information – Arabic

Please see photos here.

Next week:

UOI:

investigating sound

increase observational skills by using senses to gather and record information in order to identify patterns, make predictions and refine their ideas.

select different tools and explore ways to use them for their investigations/inquiry.

identify a question or problem to be explored.

discover the way objects and phenomena function, identify parts of a system and gain an understanding of cause-and-effect relationships.

Literacy:

making words

handwriting practise

creative writing

scientific observational writing

UOI related vocabulary

guided and independent reading

Maths:

shape and space

attributes of 3D shapes

Sort, describe, and label 2D and 3D shapes.

Analyse and describe the relationship between 2D and 3D shapes

Upcoming events:

Book Fair Week

30th April Primary Assembly (KG – G1)

For our UOI this week, we have begun our new unit focusing on the Central Idea: Light and sound help people experience the world.
